We are doing more with less. Right now, you may find yourself deeply immersed in the complexities of leadership. With a shortage of drivers, routing difficulties, budget limitations, and district issues, you might be questioning your life and career decisions. Striving to achieve, adapting to the new realities of AI and political dynamics, and facing a lack of respect and appreciation for our efforts can be overwhelming!
Some folks believe that leadership is a natural or organic skill. Some people have it and others don’t. I beg to differ. While some are more inclined to assume leadership positions, it is not an inherent skill. Leadership demands more than just a pleasing appearance, strong communication skills, or a title; it requires a unique blend of skills and courage. To be a truly exceptional leader, one must also embody ethics and humility!
Our members often tell me that they came into leadership unexpectedly. They did well in their jobs, and they were either recruited, “volun-told,” or encouraged to pursue a new position or title. They often share that they were unprepared and very surprised by what they found.
Leadership training is not a luxury—it’s essential for achieving excellence. It can happen in many ways, such as formal programs, college or university opportunities, self-discovery via reading or study, experiences that build your leadership muscle, and mentorship or coaching. For many of us, it was a combination of all the above.
Where are you on your leadership journey? Whether you are just starting out, progressing in your career, or at its pinnacle, continual training and experience are crucial. Our world is turning and changing fast, five years ago, AI was in its infancy. Think about all the changes our industry has experienced in the last twenty years! While your past training and experience is valid- to stay on top of the game…you must stay on top of your game!
So where do you go and what should you do? I would recommend six steps:
1. Keep informed. Be active in your state association and NAPT. Know firsthand what is happening in our industry. Keep abreast of industry developments by attending events, reading publications, and networking whenever possible.
2. Know yourself. Understanding your strengths and skills is vital. This self-awareness includes understanding what you do not know and what you may need to add to your skill set. Being an exceptional leader requires emotional intelligence and a desire to learn!
3. Find a coach, mentor, or advisor. Identify someone who you respect and admire who is a successful leader. Ask for assistance when needed, seek a more formal mentoring relationship if possible and create a cadre of leaders who will advise and help you. I can honestly say, this has been a pivotal and key element to my own journey!
4. Dedicate time and resources. Allocate time to participate in programs or classes, time to read great books and expand your education. If you do not have a certification or a degree, explore that option. Invest in yourself and your future.
5. Risk. Risk? Yes, take risks! Step outside of your comfort zone and seize new opportunities. Speak at a conference, teach a class, volunteer to serve on a committee. Do something you have never done!
6. Own your opportunities! Your life and your career are yours. You can either let circumstances dictate your path or take charge of your career. You can also play it forward – share your knowledge, encourage others to embrace leadership, and foster a team of outstanding leaders.
Earlier, I mentioned ethics and integrity. These are foundational attributes of exceptional leaders. Don’t just discuss them—embody them. Avoid relationships or actions that might compromise your integrity. Stay true to your word and exemplify the leadership qualities you admire.
The student transportation industry is brimming with leadership opportunities! The future holds exciting prospects for our field—don’t let them pass you by!
