Successful school bus electrification begins before the vehicles arrive. Districts must understand daily mileage, charging windows, facility power, climate demands and funding opportunities. The Electric CE Series is a Type C school bus designed specifically for electric propulsion. Built at the IC Bus facility in Tulsa, Oklahoma, it combines zero tailpipe emissions with a platform engineered for the demands of daily student transportation. The bus accommodates up to 78 passengers and is available in several wheelbase configurations, allowing districts to match vehicle size and seating capacity to individual assignments.
Range Matched to the Route
Because route requirements differ widely, IC Bus offers the Electric CE Series with two battery configurations. The 210-kilowatt-hour option provides an estimated range of up to 135 miles, while the 315-kilowatt-hour configuration extends estimated range beyond 200 miles.
This choice lets stakeholders evaluate range against actual duty cycles instead of automatically purchasing maximum battery capacity for every vehicle. A district might select the smaller battery for predictable neighborhood routes while assigning the extended-range model to longer runs, rural service or schedules that include extracurricular trips.
Actual range depends on operating conditions, including weather, terrain, driving behavior, passenger load and accessory use. IC Bus supports vehicle selection with route simulation and an evaluation of a district’s battery-electric requirements.
The powertrain uses a 650-volt, six-phase permanent magnet direct-drive motor that produces up to 255 kilowatts, or 342 horsepower. Three levels of driver-selectable regenerative braking allow drivers to adjust how strongly the bus slows and recovers energy when the accelerator is released. This gives drivers greater control while helping return energy to the battery.
Charging and Energy Flexibility
The Electric CE Series arrives ready for both AC and DC fast charging. A standard front charge port simplifies access in many depot layouts, while a rear charge-port location is optional. IC Bus also offers vehicle-to-grid capability, opening the possibility of coordinated energy use when buses are parked.
Charging time depends on battery size, charger output, starting state of charge and environmental conditions. IC Bus lists an estimated six-hour charging time for the usable capacity of its 210-kilowatt-hour battery with a 30-kilowatt charger. The larger battery requires approximately nine hours under comparable conditions. A 120-kilowatt DC fast charger can charge the smaller battery from 20 to 100 percent in about 90 minutes and the larger configuration in approximately three hours.
IC Bus works with districts on more than charger selection. Its zero-emissions resources address utility coordination, site capacity, permitting, installation schedules, parking arrangements and future fleet expansion. Designed Around the Driver
The Electric CE Series incorporates IC Bus’s DriverFirst approach, which uses input and research from school bus drivers to shape the cockpit. Features include a digital gauge cluster, a left-hand switch panel and steering-wheel-mounted controls intended to place frequently used functions within convenient reach.
Electric propulsion delivers immediate torque with reduced powertrain noise, helping create a calmer environment for both drivers and passengers. The bus is also equipped with air disc brakes, antilock braking and electronic stability control. IC Bus says it was the first school bus manufacturer to make electronic stability control standard and offers additional safety technologies, including camera systems.
Durability and serviceability remain important considerations in the electric platform. The CE Series uses a heat-treated alloy-steel frame and offers International Ride Optimized Suspension air suspension. Routine service points are arranged for accessibility beneath a wide-opening hood supported by dual hood-assist struts.
Factory-installed telematics include a five-year connectivity subscription. Through My International™, fleets can access remote vehicle-health information, diagnostics, service history and real-time monitoring. These tools help maintenance teams recognize emerging concerns and coordinate service with greater visibility.
From route analysis and charging design to driver education and technician preparation, IC Bus presents electrification as an operational transition rather than a stand-alone vehicle purchase.
