Every school day across North America, millions of families place their trust in a simple promise: the school bus will arrive to safely deliver children to school and return home the same way. That promise is delivered, quietly and reliably, by the yellow school bus. From rural roads to urban neighborhoods, the school bus is far more than a means of transportation; it is a critical link to education for students of all ages, abilities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. For generations, the yellow school bus has made education a reality for millions by making safety the priority.
That level of trust does not happen by chance. It is the result of coordinated systems, rigorous standards, professional training, and public accountability, supported by the dedicated transportation professionals who put student safety first every day. At a time when the future of student transportation is being actively debated, it is essential to reaffirm what has long been proven: the yellow school bus remains the safest, most reliable, and most equitable way to transport students to and from school.
The work of the National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT) and the NAPT Foundation centers around a vision of a world where every student has access to safe and efficient transportation. That vision coupled with the facts surrounding the yellow school bus is why we are launching Driven Together, a public awareness campaign dedicated to telling the full story of student transportation and reinforcing the essential role the yellow school bus plays in education and community life.
In an increasingly challenging environment, NAPT seeks to promote the value of this work in our schools and to advocate for the continued leadership role the school bus plays in supporting education. Safety in student transportation is not achieved through rapid scaling or individualized solutions; it is built through consistent standards, professional training, and systems designed for public accountability.
DRIVEN TOGETHER
Not just a slogan; Driven Together is a call to action by a profession dedicated to the idea that keeping our children safe is the noblest mission.
It is incumbent upon us to ensure that families, neighbors, and community leaders fully understand the school bus’s proven safety record, the systems and standards that make it possible, and the unwavering commitment to safety that guides student transportation every day. At a moment when how children get to and from school is reconsidered and redefined, that understanding has never been more important.
Through Driven Together, NAPT is asking school districts, transportation leaders, and the businesses who serve them, to actively share this story with families, bringing safety, trust, and transparency to the forefront of community conversations. Each month, the campaign will provide information and stories to help parents, policymakers, and community leaders understand why the yellow school bus remains the safest and most reliable way to transport students.
THE CALL
As conversations about student transportation continue to evolve, it is essential that communities, policymakers, and education leaders remain grounded in what works. How children get to school is not a matter of convenience or efficiency alone, it is a matter of safety, equity, and public trust. Protecting student transportation requires action, not assumption.
Through Driven Together, NAPT will elevate the voices of transportation professionals, highlight proven safety practices, and engage families, educators, and leaders in meaningful dialogue about the future of student transportation. We will advocate for policies that reinforce safety and accountability, promote workforce development, and ensure that the yellow school bus remains a vital part of the educational landscape.
TEAMWORK: THE KEY
We know that school bus safety is a team sport. All members of a school bus operation are vital, and their teamwork keeps kids safe. Driven Together will celebrate the amazing work that school bus drivers, technicians, dispatchers, trainers, aides, and administrators perform in the interests of safe and efficient transportation for our schoolchildren.
We will feature and focus on the work these incredible professionals do each day and engage with our members and partners to recognize and celebrate their dedication. We will do this in close collaboration with our many state and provincial affiliates.
We will present them with an expanded array of educational opportunities to enable them to increase their skills and knowledge.
PARTNERSHIPS
NAPT’s work is strengthened by a broad network of trusted partners who share a commitment to student safety and educational access. We collaborate closely with education leaders and organizations, including superintendents, school boards, school business officials, parent groups, and community stakeholders, who understand that reliable, safe transportation is essential to student success.
These partnerships reflect a shared responsibility to serve children well. Through Driven Together, NAPT will continue to deepen collaboration with education partners and industry leaders to advance best practices, strengthen systems, and ensure that transportation solutions support learning in every community.
We will also highlight the contributions of our corporate partners, whose innovation, expertise, and commitment to safety help ensure that school buses remain reliable, modern, and secure environments for students every day.
ADDRESSING CONCERNS
We are proud of the school bus’s long-standing safety record and deeply respectful of the professionals whose work sustains it every day. At a time when many have questioned the viability of the school bus, we believe it is critical that we stand tall in our history and safety record.
Like many sectors that rely on skilled operators, school transportation has faced workforce shortages and fiscal pressures in recent years. These challenges are real, but they are not unique and they are not a reason to abandon a system that has consistently protected students. Rather, they are a call to strengthen the public infrastructure that supports education and to invest in the people and resources that make safety possible.
Some have suggested that the school bus has outlived its usefulness. To those who question our value, we offer Mark Twain’s message to his detractors in 1897, “Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.”
Twain’s words seem to be a fitting way to close out this first discussion about a vital symbol of American education: the yellow school bus. The Yellow School Bus is here to stay and NAPT remains committed to ensuring its story, its value, and its role in education are clearly understood.
CALL TO ACTION
Over the next months, NAPT will share perspectives on the school bus, our record of safety, the dedicated work of our teams and partners, and our hopes for the years ahead.
Our Driven Together campaign will:
• Strengthen recognition of the yellow school bus as essential educational infrastructure, reinforcing its role in ensuring safe, equitable access to learning for all students
• Advance policies and practices that promote safety and that secure the vital role of the yellow school bus in transportation of our children to and from school
• Expand educational and professional development opportunities for student transportation professionals
• Collaborate with educational coalitions and partners to align efforts that support student well-being
• Elevate and honor the professionals behind student transportation
Driven Together is a collective effort and it is strengthened by those who choose to be part of it.
