MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Christy Zukowski

School BUSRide spoke to Christy Zukowski, Sr. Marketing Communications Manager for IC Bus. She discussed the importance of being a business partner to NAPT, and shared what she finds most exciting about pupil transportation in 2025.

Can you tell us about your career and what led you to your position at IC Bus?

I’m a seasoned marketer with a passion for building solid brands. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work in various industries, including paper products and building materials. Eventually, I sought a new role that was closer to home and more purpose-driven.

When I came across the job posting for a marketing lead position for IC Bus® during the tail-end of COVID, I thought, “Why not give it a try?” The opportunity to work in an industry that serves children and contributes to a higher purpose was very appealing. I was thrilled to bring my expertise to the automotive industry and eager to delve into the world of student transportation. I haven’t looked back since.

From your perspective as a business partner to pupil transportation providers, what are the most pressing challenges in the industry?

One of the biggest challenges is driver shortages, which directly impact ridership. In nearly every meeting, conference, or industry discussion I attend, the need to recruit and retain drivers remains a top concern. Addressing this issue is critical to ensuring smooth and efficient transportation for students.

Additionally, economic and political changes may also play a role, though the extent of their impact is uncertain. Despite these challenges, what stands out to me about this industry is the shared commitment among school districts, manufacturers, and associations. We are all working toward a common goal: ensuring students are transported safely to and from school. This shared purpose sets pupil transportation apart from other industries, making it incredibly rewarding to be a part of.

Moreover, the industry fosters a collaborative environment where people readily share best practices and expertise to improve outcomes for everyone. That spirit of cooperation is truly inspiring.

How can NAPT business partners and NAPT collaborate more effectively?

NAPT brings tremendous value by highlighting critical industry topics. I appreciate the open communication and brainstorming opportunities with NAPT. Maintaining this dialogue is key to strengthening the entire industry. By working together, we can continue to tackle challenges, drive innovation, and create meaningful solutions.

What excites you most about pupil transportation in 2025?

I’m excited to see the advancements and innovations coming to the industry this year. While I can’t share too much yet, I know there are exciting developments on the horizon from IC Bus. Every year, the industry evolves, bringing new improvements that enhance safety, efficiency, and overall effectiveness. It’s fascinating to watch these advancements unfold and witness the positive impact they have on student transportation. I look forward to seeing where the industry is headed and how we can continue to improve transportation for students everywhere.
